Here’s an excerpt from stuffynose.org.

Enduring a stuffy nose is tedious, aggravating and everything in between!  A stuffy nose can be caused from allergies, a sinus infection, the common cold or even the flu.  With winter and colder weather just right around the corner, we need to educate ourselves with home remedies for stuffy noses.  By using home remedies, you are saving money not having to go to the doctor or spend money on over-the-counter medicine wonders that never do the job – or at least not as well as they say they will.

Home remedies for stuffy noses are the best way to go when suffering from a stuffed up nose.  A stuffy nose isn’t usually something to be concerned about in terms of seriousness; however, it’s a concern when we can’t breathe through our nose – especially when we are having to breathe through our mouth, which ultimately causes chapped lips, which are no fun either!

Steam Yourself with Vicks

Steam is one of the most common ways to relieve a stuffy nose at home but why not add a little more to it?  When I was growing up and had a stuffy nose, my mom would boil a pot of water on the stove then add a little bit of Vicks to the boiling water.  She would then cover the pot and let it all boil in together while not allowing any of it to escape.  I would then put a towel over my head and lean over the pot while inhaling the Water/Vicks mix that she had made.  I thought it was crazy the first time she had me do it – until it actually worked!  Instead of Vicks, you can also use salt, vinegar, peppermint oil or eucalyptus oil as these are both known to work wonders.  What’s more is that while you will be unstopping your nose, you’ll also be getting a wonderful, cheap facial.

Think About What You Are Putting Into Your Body
You are what you eat and drink – or so people say.  When you have a stuffy nose, you should try not to consume alcohol or caffeine beverages as these will only cause your stuffy nose to worsen.  Try drinking tea, green tea, herbal teas, juice and/or water as these are most likely to help alleviate the stuffy nose.

Make Your Own Saline Nasal Spray
There is no reason to spend money on something at the store when you can make it for cheap at home.  Saline nasal spray doesn’t cost much to make at home and more than likely, you already have all the ingredients needed.  All you need is a quarter to half a teaspoon of salt and a cup of water!  It’s best to use distilled water rather than tap water though to help eliminate contamination found in the water.  If you can’t use distilled water then be sure you boil the water and let it cool prior to use.  You’ll use it just as you would the OTC nasal spray – put a few sprays or drops (depending on the container used for the solution) in each nostril.
